During a campaign stop in Michigan on Mar. 7, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders stated:
'Marijuana is not heroin! [big applause]. I'm not here advocating for marijuana. I've done marijuana twice in my life when I was very young [cheers]. What it did for me was it made me cough a lot. That was my response. But I gather other people have had different experiences… Marijuana is listed as a Schedule I drug alongside heroin [boos]. I agree, and that is why I believe we should take marijuana out of the federal Controlled Substances Act.'
Sanders has sponsored Senate Bill 2337, which would remove marijuana from the CSA. It's currently in the Judiciary Committee.
