Hash Bash 2021 - Ann Arbor

Hash Bash on the U of M diag

The 50th Hash Bash was scheduled to take place on April 3 on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, but the Covid pandemic scuttled those plans and organizers took the event to Twitch. But that hasn't stopped Adam Brook from assembling a crowd on the Diag, despite police warnings not to for safety reasons.

“If you ask me, Hash Bash happens on the Diag," says Brook, a longtime Hash Bash organizer, "so I would say that the official Hash Bash is on the Diag, and these people who are afraid to appear in public are now doing something virtually."

The online program will include such heavy hitters as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, State Sen. Jeff Irwin, former Detroit Red Wing Darren McCarty, former Detroit Lion Calvin Johnson and activist John Sinclair.

Hash Bash was founded in 1971 after Sinclair was arrested and jailed for selling two joints.

The in-person Hash Bash will begin at High Noon. Brook expects 500-1,000 attendees.

“There won’t be anybody passing joints," he explains. "You’d be a fool to do that today, but you can unmask and smoke a joint safely, just like you can sit in a restaurant and unmask.”
