Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden was booted from a Sydney hotel on Sunday after a maid found a small amount of marijuana in his room. New South Wales police were contacted by The Star Casino & Hotel, who asked Madden to leave the property. The company's policy is to evict anyone caught with illegal drugs.
Madden had been staying at the hotel for the past few weeks while taping the Australian version of The Voice. He's been a vocal coach on the show since 2011.
Madden, who's married to socialite Nicole Ritchie, released the following statement via his Tumblr page: "Sunday while I was at work, a hotel employee found a small amount of marijuana in my hotel room. The police were called and responded. Sydney is my adopted home and I appreciate the way the NSW police handled the situation. They have informed me there will be no charges. I hope this didn't cause too much drama for everyone."
Authorities found less than five grams of marijuana in the room and, even though the investigation is continuing, no charges have been filed. NSW law permits authorities to issue a simple caution over possession of such a small amount of drugs.
Madden's fellow coach on The Voice, Seal called out the police, hotel and local media via Twitter. "Having a joint in the privacy of his hotel room is worthy of front page news???" he asked before deleting his "rant."
Madden, along with his identical twin brother Benji, formed Good Charlotte in 1996. Of their five albums, two have gone platinum. Their latest, Cardiology, came out in 2010.
