Today at 4 pm ET on his Fox show, Dr. Mehmet Oz weighed in on the marijuana addiction debate. "As a physician, I believe marijuana has a therapeutic role for patients with conditions such as cancer and chronic pain," he writes on his blog. "But my bottom line is that I cannot condone any type of impairment for recreational purposes, especially when the consequences are diminished mental capacity and possibly even dependence."
On his website, Oz features a blog by addiction specialist Paula Riggs, who appeared on the show. "Because of marijuana's negative effects on attention, memory and learning," she writes, "individuals who smoke marijuana daily may function at a reduced intellectual level some or all of the time." Riggs is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Denver's Department of Psychiatry.
Don't expect a major reversal on pot from Oz, like Dr. Sanjay Gupta recently did on CNN. Oz appears to share reservations about marijuana use with fellow celeb doc, Drew Pinsky.
