The controversy over Phil Robertson's remarks about homosexuality has sparked a huge debate over his right to speak his mind, no matter how stupid his comments are. The devout Christian was once a drug user.
"I have been immoral, drunk, high," Robertson said at a Christian study group Sunday in West Monroe, Louisiana. "I ran with the wicked people for 28 years."
"It took the blood of God to remove my sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle - sin," the suspended Duck Dynasty has stated. "That's the price. When I was sitting there listening to that, I thought, Man that was a mighty kind thing to do for a scumbag like me.
"I have my past, you have yours," he said to a Christian crowd earlier this year. "Drugs, sexual immorality, alcohol, cursing… until I learned the error of my ways."
Robertson erred big time when he told a GQ interviewer: “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Beastiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men... Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers - they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
In 2010, he said about gay people: “They will dishonor their bodies with one another, degrade each other… They’re full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant God-haters. They are heartless. They are faithless. They are senseless. They are truthless. They invent ways of doing evil.”
The satirical website and Facebook page Marijuana MAKES You Violent jokes that Robertson "hates reefers" and believes "marijuana is a drug for thieves, criminals, evil men and losers."
