Comedian George Carlin grew up in West Harlem In New York, on 121 St. between Morningside Dr. and Amsterdam Ave., which after some controversy, has been christened George Carlin Way.
Leading the opposition was Corpus Christi Church, located on 121st between Broadway and Amsterdam, where Carlin, who died n 2008, attended. His sacrilegious humor and references to the church did not endear him to the Catholic institution. Mayor de Blasio approved the designation this summer after a two-year battle led by fellow comic Kevin Bartini.
In attendance at the unveiling of the sign on Oct. 22 were Carlin's daughter Kelly and older brother Patrick, his wife Sally Wade, and a slew of supporters including Robert Klein, Gilbert Gottfried, Colin Quinn and Judah Friedlander.
Lighting up a joint, Patrick Carlin noted, "This is how you honor George Carlin."
