Distinctions: Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, ABB were the greatest of the Southern Rock blues-influenced bands. He wrote some the group's most enduring songs, including "Whipping Post" (1969), "Midnight Rider" (1970, with Robert Payne), "Ain't Wasting Time No More" and "Melissa" (both 1972), and "Wasted Words" (1973). His solo albums – Laid Back (No. 13, 1973) and I'm No Angel (No. 30, 1987) – were also successful. The single "I'm No Angel" cracked the charts in 1987 (No, 49). He also played a dealer in the 1991 movie Rush.
