Ed Sherran shares a few good backstage smoking stories on the latest episode of the Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast.
The British pop singer, who's not much of a toker, dishes on his favorite celebrity stoners. His attitude is "when in Rome..."
Snoop Dogg and Russell Crowe
"I was in Melbourne recently. I was with my wife and my mother-in-law and Snoop Dogg was playing. I was like, We've got to go. I guess he plays in England but it's never when I have a night off. I remember him meeting my mother-in-law and was like, Wassup, Queen?
"I sort've have become close friends with Russell Crowe over the years and he's really close with Snoop Dogg. They have smoke offs and stuff.
“I don't really smoke at all. I was in the dressing room, and they're just blunt after blunt after blunt. And I'm like, I guess at some point during the night, I have to, just to say I smoked with Snoop Dogg. So I was kind of having this conversation with him. I'm drinking my wine and blah blah blah.
"He was like, ‘Do you want some?' and I was like, now's the time. We had a good amount of conversation, so I have a bit, and I was like, I don't feel too bad, this is good. Then I have a bit more, and then I have a bit more, and then I have a bit more. Oh my God.
"I just remember looking at him and being like, I can't see right now.”
Burna Boy
"There's an artist I work quite a lot with called Burna Boy. That's the most I've seen anyone ingest weed. I work 10 to five and he came to the studio - and I had a gig later that night - and the studio was closed and it was smoke, smoke, smoke, smoke. I remember walking on stage to the gig and, like the same thing, I wasn't quite here."
Seth Rogen
O'Brien: "I never smoked. It's not my thing. It never took with me."
Sheeran: "I just assumed you might go occasisionally, like When in Rome..."
O'Brien: "I have in situations when the situation's right. I don't get stranger or I'm already strange. They cancel each other out. The last show we did Seth Rogen wanted me to smoke one with him on the air."
Sherran: "He's another one I feel like you have to smoke with."
O'Brien: "It's a national crime if you don't."
Notes
• The backstage session with Snoop Dogg and Crowe most likely took place at the Rick Laver Arena in Melbourne on March 5 or 6. Both Sherran and Snoop were touring separately Down Under when their paths crossed. Sheeran has a number of Top 10 songs, including the No. 1 "Shape of You" in 2016, four Grammys and 16 nominations. Sherran's wife is Cherry Seaborn.
• Russell Crowe was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia. He won the Best Actor Oscar for Gladiator in 2001.
• Burna Boy (nee Damini Ogulu) hails from Nigeria. He won the Best Global Album Grammy in 2021 and has been nominated six times. He also has a cannabis brand called BrkFst.
• Houseplant co-founder, actor/comedian Seth Rogen did coax O'Brien into smoking a joint during his final show on TBS on June 22, 2021. Rogen's currently co-starring in Dumb Money.
