At a Town Hall meeting at St. Magdalen's Parish Center in Flemington, New Jersey yesterday, Gov. Chris Christie once again declared: “I will not decriminalize marijuana, I will not permit recreational use and I will not legalize marijuana, because I think that is the wrong message to send to children in this state and to young adults."
At a Town Hall meeting at the Mount Laurel YMCA in Mount Laurel, New Jersey on Mar. 13 (see clip below), Christie stated: "The people who started the War on Drugs were well-intentioned. And they had an idea. But we've tried the idea for 30 plus years and it hasn't worked. We can't keep doing the same thing and think it's going to change all of a sudden. We've got to try something different…. In New Jersey we're changing it. We're changing the attitude to say, 'We're not going to lock them up and throw away the key.' Because, guess what? They're coming back. And when they do, I want them to come back as a more whole person and not as somebody who is just not going to be able to deal with these things in their life."
Update: On Mar. 27, Christie replied to a question about marijuana legalization on "Ask the Governor" on WKXW-FM 101.5 in New Jersey: "I don't believe that legalizing an illegal drug for purposes of governmental profit is something that we should be doing. I believe that this is a gateway drug into other more serious drugs. I think it sends a wrong message to our kids and I don't think it makes anybody a better or more productive person."
