Shortly after Mike Boyer jubilantly bought the first bag of legal recreational marijuana ever sold in Spokane, which was recorded on television, he says his employers demanded he take drug tests.
“I was really unaware that this might be a big deal,” says Boyer, who waited Monday night outside Green Leaf at 9107 N. Country Homes Blvd. He purchased a two-gram bag on Tuesday when the store opened and then went home and lit up for TV cameras.
Word got back to two of his employers. A rep for Kodiac Security Services, stated: "We’re a security firm. Our employees can’t be under the influence on the job.”
Update: It turns out Boyer was not fired by the temp agency he works for. Labor Readyrep Stacy Burke says they thought he was supposed to be on the job Tuesday. When they found out Boyer took the day off, they rescinded the drug-test request. "Under the law, he can do that," she said about him lighting up off the job.
Boyer posted this note with his resume at Cragislist: "I lost my job due to the news coverage of me being the FIRST PERSON TO BUY MARIJUANA LEGALLY IN SPOKANE! I regret nothing. But now I'm jobless and have decided to post my resume here. Thanks for reviewing it."
In the TV interview, he wondered, "With all this legalization, where is going to be the gray line? Just because I smoke a little weed on my time off, why am I here now?... Well, I am No. 1 and nobody can take that!"
Legal recreational marijuana sales began in Washington State on Tuesday.
