The Kansas woman who had her son taken away by the state because he mentioned his mother's marijuana use in school turned herself in to Finney County authorities on June 15.
Ten days earlier, Crohn's disease sufferer Shona Banda was charged with endangering a child, distribution or possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of school property, unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. The first three are felonies.
This stems from a drug education class on Mar. 24, during which Banda's son allegedly indicated illegal drugs where being used in their Garden City home. A search found 1.25 pounds of marijuana in various forms. Banda also had a lab for making cannabis oil.
Her son was taken by the Department of Children and Families and placed in the custody of his father, Banda's ex. The 11-year-old has since been moved into protective custody.
“For him to have spoken up in class I can’t be upset about because he hears me daily on the phone talking with people, encouraging people to speak up and speak out," Banda said at the time. "We did have the talk about how it’s not OK to bring this up in Kansas, because it’s a different state [than Colorado]. It’s very confusing for a child.”
