Distinctions: Known as Dr. John the Night Tripper, he melded New Orleans jazz-funk with psychedelia on his 1968 debut album, Gris-Gris, which features "I Walk on Gilded Splinters." In the Right Place (No. 24, 1973) has several hits: "Right Place, Wrong Time" (No. 9) and "Such a Night," which he performed with The Band in The Last Waltz (1978). In total, he recorded 27 studio albums from 1968-2014. He was nominated for 15 Grammy awards and won six times for "Makin' Whoopee" (Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group, 1989); Goin' Back to New Orleans (Best Traditional Blues Album, 1992); "SRV Shuffle" (Best Rock Instrumental Performance, 1996); "Is You Is, Or Is You Ain't (My Baby)" (Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, 2000); City That Care Forgot (Best Contemporary Blues Album, 2008); and Locked Down (Best Blues Album, 2012). He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
