Druggy streaming series Dopesick, Euphoria and Ozark won 2022 Emmys on September 12 as well as the Judd Apatow and Mike Bonfiglio's George Carlin's American Dream and CelebStoner Amy Poehler's Lucy and Desi documentaries. Here's the stony rundown:
• After winning numerous awards earlier this year, Dopesick on Hulu earned 14 Emmy noms, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Lead Actor (Michael Keaton), Supporting Actresses (Kaitlyn Dever and Mare Winningham) and Supporting Actors (Will Pouter, Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stulhberg). The series charts Purdue Pharma's rise and fall. As expected, Keaton won for his portrayal of Dr. Sam Finnix. It also won for Cinematography.
• With 16 noms, Euphoria was among the hottest shows of 2022. The high school series' second season was up for Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actress (Zendaya) and Supporting Actress (Sydney Sweeney). Zendaya won. It also won for Cinematography, Choreography and Guest Actor (As Ali).
• The powerful drug-money laundering series, Ozark, received 13 noms for its final season, including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor (Jason Bateman), Lead Actress (Laura Linney) and Supporting Actress (Julie Garner). Garner won.
• Rachel Brosnahan's portrayal of Midge Maisel in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Netflix earned her another Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series nom, which she won in 2018. Maisel's co-star Alex Bornstein, who plays her agent Susie Myerson, received a Supporting Actress nom. The series, in its fourth season, got 12 overall, including Outstanding Comedy Series, but failed to take any major awards/
• Lost in the woods after a plane crash, a girl's soccer team tries to make the best of a bad situation in Yellowjackets on Showtime, which received seven noms for its first season, buy lost. In Episode 9, Misty (Samantha Hanratty) slips some magic mushrooms into the a soup.
• Judd Apatow and Mike Bonfiglio's George Carlin's American Dream on HBO received five noms, includng Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Program. The two-parter paints Carlin as an original cannabis legalization advocate. It won.
• HBO's Hacks received 17 noms, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actress (Jean Smart - she won in 2021) and Supporting Actress (Hannah Einbender). The characters smoke pot in Season 1. Smart won as well as Guest Actress Laurie Metcalf, who plays "Weed."
• Now in Season 4, Stranger Things on Netflix features weed smoking and the stoner character Argyle (Eduardo Franco). The show won for Music Supervision.
CelebStoner Nominees
• Amy Poehler: Noms for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Program and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program for Lucy and Desi on Prime. She's received 21 nominations, but only won once for her guest appearance on Saturday Night Live in 2016. The doc won for Writing and Music Composition.
• Seth Rogen: Nom for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role as Rand Gauthier, who stole the famous sex tape in Pam & Tommy on Hulu. It was Rogen's third Emmy nom; he lost again.
• Dave Chappelle: Nom for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) for The Closer on Netflix, which drew protests because of the comic's transphobic comments. He's won five Emmys and has been nominated 11 times. The Closer lost.
