The Strange Saga of Rasta Davonne Bess

Davonne Bess’ Broward County Jail mug shot, taken Friday after an altercation with police at Ft. Lauderdale Airport.

Browns wide receiver Davonne Bess is acting more like a rude boy than an NFL football player. In the last two days, he was arrested for assaulting an officer and posted a photo of a blunt and weed.

Bess' erratic behavior began last March while he was still with the Miami Dolphins. Broward County police were called to his home in Cooper City, where he was ranting and raving about guns and weed. It took six cops to pin him down. Bess was briefly hospitalized (he was suffering from insomnia) after the incident but not arrested. This led to the Dolphins trading him to Cleveland the following month.

In December, the Browns put Bess on the non-football/reserve list for "personal reasons"; he missed the last two games of the season.

Also in December, Bess posted a photo of himself lighting a blunt, with the hashtags #JahLive! and #giveTHX. Bess, who was born in Oakland, is a Rastafarian.

Davonne Bess posted this blunt and pot pic at Twitter. In the background is Billy Corben’s "Cocaine Cowboys."

This became clearer with his latest photo posting, this one showing on a table half a smoked blunt, about a gram of loose ganja, plus an eighth-sized bag containing marijuana, a bottle of 5-Hour Energy and his cell phone with the word Jah on the screen as the movie Cocaine Cowboys plays in the background. It was captioned, "We are the real Dons." It's since been deleted from Twitter.

Rasta Davonne Bess with dreads: he likes to use hashtags like #JahLive! and #giveTHX.

Right on the heels of Bess' photo stunt, he got into an altercation with police at 6:20 am Friday morning at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport. The police report says he was "acting irrationally, dancing, singing with his pants repeatedly falling down" and appeared to be "under the influence of an unknown narcotic." Bess allegedly spilled coffee on a cop, removed his shirt and got into a "fighting stance." Bess was charged with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Bess was soon released from Broward County Jail on $100 bail.

Davonne Bess scampers into the end zone, one of only two touchdowns he scored in the 2013 season.

Bess starred at Hawaii and after not being selected in the 2008 draft, Miami signed him. During five seasons with the Dolphins, he averaged 64 receptions for 689 yards per season, but only had 11 TDs overall. Cleveland acquired Bess in a trade last April. He had his worst season with the Browns, accumulating just 42 catches for 362 yards in 14 games.

The wiggy wideout earns about $3 million a year and is signed through 2016. But if he doesn't turn it around, Rasta Davone Bess may not be long for the NFL.
