South Carolina native Shi Smith was arrested in his home state on March 25. He's a wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers and played college football at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
The arrest took place on Highway 176 in Union County at 11:30 am. Police clocked him driving 86 mph in a 50 mph zone. The smell of cannabis led to a search. Smith was charged with speeding, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and unlawful carrying of a handgun.
He bailed out of Union County Detention Center for $6,000 and must return to the county for a hearing on June 14.
It's unclear how much cannabis Smith was carrying. According to NORML, "Possession of one ounce or less [in South Carolina] is a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum sentence of 30 days imprisonment and a fine of $100-$200." Trafficking charges are felonies.
After a stellar career at USC, Smith, 23, was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft by Carolina. He made just sixth catches in his rookie season.
