3. Newlyweeds
This urban indie takes a realistic look at a couple beset with problems caused, to a large degree, by their marijuana use. In the case of Lyle (Amari Cheatum), his problem includes getting busted. He's a hothead who ultimately pushes his girlfriend Nina (Tae Harris) away. Nina, meanwhile, brings pot brownies to school; students sample them when she's not looking and get stoned. Shaka King's debut, set in Brooklyn, is reminiscent of Spike Lee's early films like She's Gotta Have It.
