9. 13th
The 13th amendment abolished slavery. In Ava DuVernay's Netfilx documentary, the 13th amendment is seen as a parallel to mass incarceration of people of color. She has a good point. America's prison population has ballooned to 2.3 million people, mostly male and, again, of color. It's really shocking what has happened in the name of the War on Drugs since it was launched by Richard Nixon in 1970. Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton receive most of DuVernay's barbs, and deservedly so. Her talking heads include Cory Booker, Angela Davis, Van Jones and Dan Rather. 13th has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Documentary category.
