Star (Sasha Lane in her film debut), an 18-year-old Oklahoman, joins a group of societal castoffs as they attempt to sell magazine subscriptions in small Midwestern towns. She immediately falls for Jake (Shia LaBeouf), the Casanova of the bunch, placing her at odds with group leader Krystal (Riley Keough). Star makes a lot of daring moves, and somehow never gets hurt or taken advantage of. The sales team does a lot of dancing and sing-a-longs to keep spirits high. They also smoke weed here and there (joint, pipe, bong), and a pot leaf air freshener hangs from the van mirror. Clocking in at 2:43, Andrea Arnold's youth culture movie shines a light on the disaffected and how they can handle life's most serious challenges.
