Amazonia – it's rich history and hallucinogenic plants - has become a favorite subject and setting for filmmakers. Last year's Embrace of the Serpent received an Oscar nomination. Leonor Caraballo and Matteo Norzi's Icaros: A Vision is equally as good. Several gringos arrive at a Peruvian jungle location where ayahuasca is administered by a family of shamans, who cook up the visionary brew, sing the prayer-like icaros and dispense plant-medicine wisdom. Angelina (Ann Cecilia Stieglitz) is one of the pasajeros (passengers), She's dealing with trauma of breast cancer, but soon is feeling better. However, the young shaman, Arturo (Arturo Izquierdo), is losing his vision. He goes to a doctor in Lima, but ultimately prefers his mother's traditional medicine. In addition to the compelling story and acting, Icaros is a visual and aural treat.
