The brilliant, but shortened career of saxophone colossus John Coltrane is the subject of John Scheinfeld's film. Burdened by heroin addiction, "Trane" kicked the habit, but was ultimately done in by liver cancer at age 40. Many of Coltrane's essential albums are covered, though his most avant-garde one, Ascension, is surprisingly omitted. Bill Clinton, Carlos Santana, Wynton Marsalis, Common and Dr. Cornel West all weigh in on Coltrane's enduring impact, and Denzel Washington provides the narration.
