DRUGGY DRAMA
Rocketman
Dexter Fletcher’s thoroughly entertaining Elton John biopic hits all the right notes. It’s a terrific musical full of choregraphed set pieces of classic John-Bernie Taupin material, from “The Bitch Is Back” to“I’m Still Standing.” A child prodigy on piano, Reginald Dwight grew up to be an international star. Like Freddie Mercury, it takes John, played credibly by Golden Globes winner Taron Egerton (he does his own singing), a while to figure out his sexual identity. But on stage there’s no one more flamboyant. John falls into the black hole of drugs and alcohol – he liked his cocaine – but comes out sober and more loved by the public than ever.
