DRUGGY DRAMA
Birds of Passage
As American smugglers discover cheap quality marijuana in Colombia in the late-’60s, the indigenous Wayuu shed their traditions and start cultivating crops for international distribution. Directed by Ciro Guerra and Christina Gallego, the team behind 2016’s Oscar-nominated Embrace of the Serpent, Birds of Passage also received a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film last year, but the film was actually released in February. At the center of the story is a family headed by strong-minded matriarch Ursula (Carmina Martínez) and her daughter Zaida’s marriage to Raphayet (Jose Acosta), who along with his reckless friend Moisés (Jhon Narváez) does business with the Americans. Sadly, the good times don’t last and the region plunges into Scarface-style violence. This deep dive into Colombian culture is really worth watching. Prime, YouTube
