Who better to play Jeff Spicoli in an update of Fast Times at Ridgemont High than Shia LaBeouf?
Comedian Dan Cook organized a table read of the 1982 stoner film classic to benefit CORE and Reform. He brought together a number Oscar winners and CelebStoners to read sections from the script written by Cameron Crowe via Zoom (watch below). Here are the actors and their Fast Times parts:
LaBeouf - Jeff Spicoli
Jennifer Aniston - Linda Barrett
Julia Roberts - Stacey Hamilton
Brad Pitt - Brad Hamilton
Matthew McConuaghey - Mike Damone
Cook - Mark Ratner
John Legend - Charles Jefferson
Ray Liotta - Mr. Hand
Henry Golding - Mr. Vargas
Sean Penn - "Uber Eats driver"
Jimmy Kimmel - various characters
Morgan Freeman - narrartor
The actors run through a number of classic scenes, including Spicoli's class entrance and when he has a pizza delivered to the room and Stacey's diving board bikini fantasy sequence.
Surprisingly, Spicoli's scene (watch below) when he explains his philosphy is omitted:
"All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine."
But LaBeouf does smoke an actual joint (see image above) in the car crash scene reenacted with Legend. The Zoom often pans to Penn laughing. He began his career playing the iconic surfer dude. It would've been fun to hear him reprise Spicoli but alas no such luck. Penn hardly says a word during the reading.
