DRUGGY DRAMA/WOMEN

Trim Season

What could've been a nice summer-camp movie about the joys of marijuana turns into a macabre romp in the Northern California woods courtesy of director Ariel Vida. Friends Emma (Bethlehem Millions) and Julia (Alexandra Essdoe) are short on funds so they decide to take a two-week job trimming weed.

It's like Psycho on the mountain with a weird old house and strange woman Mona (Jane Badler) and her sons Christopher (Cory Hart) and Malcolm (Ryan Donowho) running things. The women are deposited in a basement dungeon where the buds are cut.

In addition to Emma and Julia, there are several other trimmers, including Harriet (Ally Ionnnides) who discovers Mona's "super-secret stash": red-colored buds made with human organs in the soil. Yup, gross. When she smokes, Mona gains a power she inflicts on others. The trimmers figure this out and it's war for the last half hour as they fight back against the bizarre family.

"It's an amazing plant, cannabis," Mona exclaims devilishly. "It's capable of so much."

STONER COMEDY/TEENS

Y2K

SNL alum Kyle Moody's first feature – he directs, writes and co-stars – is a thought-provoking hoot. Two nerdy teens right out of Superbad – Eli (Eden Martel) and Danny (Julian Dennison) – decide to go to a Y2K party on New Year's Eve in 1999 when some people believed a cataclysmic event would happen entering the new century. Eli has his eye on popular girl Laura (Rachel Zeigler) as the clock ticks towards 12. Following the celebration, all hell breaks loose with computers turning into evil robots, massacring people and starting fires everywhere. Eli, Rachel, CJ (Daniel Zolghadri) and Ash (Lachlan Watson) head to a safe house where video-store owner Garret (Moody) is hitting a bong, oblivious to what's going on. When a robot attacks, Laura and Eli team up to disarm it, saving the world for at least another century.

Box office: $3.7 million
