Cheech & Chong's Last Movie is a terrific title, harking back to Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, the follow-up to 1978's Up in Smoke. The documentary, directed by Dave Bushell, is appropriately scheduled for a 4/20 theatrical release.
While telling the stony duo's backstory, the film also features Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong on a "classic cinematic road trip."
Marin: “You sure we're going the right way?”
Chong: “We’re in the middle of fucking nowhere."
Marin: “No, we're southwest of fucking nowhere. We’re not in the middle yet.”
They met in 1969 in Vancouver where Chong was performing at clubs and Marin was evading the U.S. draft.
After launching a stand-up comedy act and releasing numerous albums, they became movie stars thanks to a stream of Cheech & Chong films in the '80s.
Chong was arrested for interstate paraphermnalia sales in 2001 and spent nine months in a federal penitentiary.
He turns 87 on May 24. Marin will be 79 on July 13.
